Where Sport, Creativity & Community Come Together
Filling Pieces and KLABU proudly opened Commewijne Spirit, a new clubhouse and tennis court at Community Tennis Suriname. The opening aligns with Suriname’s 50th year of independence, marking an important moment for celebrating community, culture, and new opportunities for young people. What started as a dream from Salome Veerman and her charity has become a reality, providing children aged 6-18 with a safe and inspiring space to play tennis, explore creativity, and connect with their community. The new court is built to international tennis standards, allowing young athletes to train, compete, and participate in regional and national tournaments.
Creativity is at the heart of the project. Local artist Fabian de Randamie collaborated with the children to design and paint the court, incorporating patterns inspired by their ideas and the Allamanda cathartica, a flower native to the Commewijne district that symbolizes growth and positivity. Ahead of the opening, children also joined workshops to develop their creative skills and contribute to the space they now call their own. From now on, Salome will lead daily tennis classes and run workshops to support both sport and learning.
The creation of Commewijne Spirit has been a collective effort, supported by On’s Right To Run program, KLABU, Filling Pieces, and everyone who purchased the Keti Koti jerseys and caps over the past three years. The project aims to provide 6,000+ young people with new opportunities in the next five years, using sport and creativity to inspire positive futures. Support the initiative by exploring the restocked limited collection of jerseys and caps, with all proceeds going directly to the clubhouse.
